A highlight on day three of the Alltech Crop Science (ACS) field tour was a visit to Grupo Mundosol, the world’s largest exporter of fresh lemons. Mundosol have a total crop surface of 1,100 hectares and produce 11 months of the year. They export to various European markets, with 85% of their production in fresh lemons and 15% specifically for juice. Mundosol is situated in the Murcia region of southern Spain, where challenges such as scarcity quality of water and soil health are prominent issues.

To overcome serious soil problems, Mundosol implement Alltech natural-based, specialised crop solutions. They have had a positive experience using Soil-Set® Aid with a noticeable improvement in the overall health of their trees, an increase in fruit uniformity, earlier maturation and enhanced colouring.

According to Antonio Palazón, agricultural technician at Grupo Mundosol, traditional agricultural methods were based on solid fertilisers; however over the last few years, Mundosol have shifted to liquid fertilisers, organic matter integration and more natural solutions. “In an effort to meet future market demands, Mundosol have dedicated 400 hectares to organic crop production.” said José Manuel Pujante, owner of Grupo Mundosol.

“Alltech Crop Science soil solutions are suitable for our irrigation practices and integrate perfectly into our crop management programme, without additional costs.” said Palazón.

“It’s been great to compare the practices at Mundosol to the techniques used in the United States. I’ve learned quite a lot,” said Mike Kelly, vegetable grower in Texas, United States.
