World Dairy Expo: Carrie Mess' Crossbred Dairy Herd

Categories:

You might call Carrie Mess a new breed of dairy farmer. At the least, you might consider her cows a new breed.

We caught up with Mess at the 2012 World Dairy Expo to talk about her farm in Johnson Creek, Wis. They have about 100 dairy cows there, but they might be a little different than your dairy cows. Most of their herd is crossbred, which has created an interesting situation on their farm.

Having the crossbred cows has helped reproduction efforts, and it’s also led to greater feed efficiency. Mess notes a few drawbacks, but it’s an interesting look at an innovative approach to dairy farming. Be sure to watch the full video to hear what she has to say.
