The 2013 Alltech Equine Technical Seminar was held on Aug. 26 as we celebrated the one-year-out mark from the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy. More than 50 equine health and nutrition professionals attended the meeting, which was located at the Hotel Malherbe in Caen where many events will be held during the Games next year.
Focusing on how to meet the nutritional needs of athletic horses, experts presented the latest innovations and results from research and development in the equine market. At the end of the meeting, Fabien Grobon, director of the Normandy Organising Committee for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy, spoke on this extraordinary international event.
The following are highlights of presentations given during the seminar:
Physiological features of the athletic horse: Oxidative stress and inflammation – Dr. Claire Leleu, equine veterinarian, Equi-Test®
- The muscular system of the horse is extremely adaptable to aerobic training. The horse’s hematocrit is variable during exercise, and its particular cardiac function allows for very high oxygen consumption during exercise.
- Aerobic training exposes the horse to a production of reactive forms of oxygen, which increases the potential for oxidative stress if its antioxidant capacity is exceeded. In the long-term, intense training and competition can create an imbalance of pro-oxidants/antioxidants and reduce motor performance.
- An adequate intake of antioxidant compounds can reduce the risk of inflammation and oxidative stress in order to avoid the degradation of the performance in the athletic horse.

- Athletic horses face several risk factors because of the high performance demands placed upon them.
- Regular monitoring of health can help anticipate and identify issues.
- A healthy diet and quality medical care are both needed to maximize the performance of athletic horses.

- Studies in the physiology of exercise allow us to estimate the cost of energy for athletic horses and tailor their diets accordingly.

- The function of the gastrointestinal system is at the heart of the relationship between the diet and the digestive health of horses.
