I have chosen my boyfriend, Chris, as my favorite farmer. He is one of the youngest full-time farmers in our county and has had a passion for farming for as long as anyone in his family can remember. He spent countless hours farming alongside his grandfather, soaking up all of his knowledge until his passing in 2006. In the 10 years that I have known Chris, his love of farming has only gotten stronger. His dedication, hard work and perseverance show in his crops. I love that Chris has been willing to show me the ins and outs of how the different pieces of machinery on the farm work. Yup, you guessed it…this farm boy picked a city girl! However, when we met, he told me I was the most country city girl he had ever met before! He occasionally will let me run the hay rake, tedder and sometimes the square baler! I love that Chris wants to share his passion of farming with others. I hope that one day he will have a son to pass this love on to as well.
As soon as the weather turns nice, I know that his work days get longer and my days with him at home are shorter, but that is what makes me love him even more. Something that a lot of people don’t know, and my family is still learning: Farming is not a job, it’s a way of life. Birthday parties, weddings, family events will be missed over the years, but I am starting be okay with that because my Favorite Farmer is doing what he LOVES to do!
I leave you with the words of one of my favorite poems from Paul Harvey: “God Looked Down On The Earth He Created and Said, 'I Need A Caretaker For The World I Have Made,' and so, God Made A Farmer.”
Chris is a winner of Alltech’s Favorite Farmer contest and will be making the trip to ONE: The Alltech Ideas Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, to meet farmers and other agriculture leaders from around the world.
